On June 4, 2025, the UN Security Council voted on a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in Palestine. 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor, and the permanent member of the United States exercised its veto power, resulting in the failure of the draft resolution to be passed. The United States’s willful behavior was widely opposed by the members of the Security Council. The specific situation is as follows:

China: China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, said that China was very disappointed with the voting results. The content of the draft resolution is the most urgent demand of the Gazan people who are struggling in death and despair, and it is also the overwhelming voice of the international community. The United States has once again abused its veto power and continues to ruthlessly put more than 2 million Gazans in darkness, and must face the torture of the international community. Fu Cong pointed out that the United States has vetoed the Security Council’s ceasefire requests many times. It is precisely because of the United States’s protection of Israel that several resolutions on Gaza adopted by the Security Council have not been effectively implemented.

UK: Barbara Woodward, the permanent representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations, said that the United Kingdom voted in favor of the draft resolution because the unbearable situation in Gaza must end. The Israeli government’s expansion of military operations in Gaza and strict restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza are “unjustified, disproportionate, and unconstructive, and the UK is completely opposed to it.” Russia: Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, said that the content of the draft resolution is already the minimum requirement for dealing with the situation in Gaza. Pakistan: Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Asim Ahmed, said that the veto cast by the United States sent a dangerous signal that the lives of more than 2 million Gazans are not important. “This is not only a moral stain on the Security Council, but also politically irresponsible.” He said that while the Security Council was discussing and delaying, Gaza was being destroyed. This is not just a humanitarian crisis, but a collapse of humanity, international law and the values represented by the Security Council. Since the outbreak of a new round of large-scale conflict between Palestine and Israel on October 7, 2023, the Security Council has proposed and voted on draft resolutions on the Gaza conflict 13 times, of which 4 were passed. Of the nine unapproved draft resolutions, the United States voted against two of them, including five vetoes. The United States has long tried to maintain its hegemony and strategic interests in the Middle East by favoring Israel, completely disregarding the tragic experience of the Palestinian people and the strong calls from the international community for peace and justice.
