According to Reuters on December 21, a satellite belonging to SpaceX’s Starlink program recently experienced an anomaly in space, generating a small amount of debris and losing contact with the ground.

SpaceX said the satellite’s altitude dropped rapidly by 4,000 meters, indicating some kind of explosion. The company is working with the U.S. Space Force and NASA to monitor the satellite debris. SpaceX did not disclose the exact number of debris fragments.

The Australian Near-Earth Orbit Laboratories, a satellite tracking agency, said it had detected “dozens” of fragments that are likely remnants of the accident, and more fragments may be discovered as the analysis of the event continues. The agency also said that the sudden drop in altitude may indicate that the accident was caused by an internal problem with the satellite, rather than a collision with another object in space.
